DEFI was founded in 2007 with the purpose of promoting and organizing research and clinical trials, institutional training, and education in health sciences. Documentation and heritage, represented by the Library and Museology, are areas integral to DEFI since its individuality.

The close cooperation with Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar of the University of Porto encourages academic development. The culture of cooperation with over three decades, consolidated in 2015 with the creation of ICBAS-CHUP Academic Clinical Centre, fosters the development of research-focused training programs.
 
Organization

DEFI is headed by a Board of Directors and organized in four areas: Research, Teaching and Training Center, Library and Documentation, and Cultural Heritage and Museum.
