The CHUP Library and Documentation Department (SBD) was established in February 1928 under the designation Central Library of Hospital de Santo António (HSA). From 2007 onwards, after the merging of the hospitals and the establishment of Centro Hospitalar do Porto, Central Library of HAS has also integrated the collections from Hospital Maria Pia, Maternidade Júlio Dinis, and Hospital Joaquim Urbano libraries. The Library is located on Level 0 – Central Wing – of the Neoclassic Building of HAS, which is a National Monument since 1910. Integrated at DEFI, the Library works as a support unit within the institutional operational structure and cooperates with CHUP Museum for reception and surveillance purposes.
The Library’s mission is to warrant access to relevant and up-to-date information to the entire CHUP staff, supporting its professional activities and hence ensuring the quality of health care provided, and supporting teaching, training, and research activities. The Library’s main goals and competences are to secure an efficient management and organization of the documentary collection, through the use of information technologies and methods universally used by Library Science; to propose the selection and acquisition of bibliographic resources, contributing to the maintenance of quality information sources, as well as the optimization of services provided; to disseminate the Library resources and their accessibility; to support the users, guiding and training them towards an efficient resource use and optimal bibliographic search; and to cooperate with national and international organisms and similar documentation services.
SBD has a printed collection with more than 700 journal titles, around 3000 books and monographs, and a rare collection of Medicine and Nursing documents termed ‘Reserved’, which belong to the Historic Fund. Over the last decade, SBD has also taken responsibility as a “Digital Library”, as other, mostly electronic/online, bibliographic resources have been included; the electronic catalogue offers several open access information sources and, among others, more than 4000 scientific journals (ejournals), over 1200 electronic books (ebooks), and multimedia resources (several thousands of pictures and several hundreds of videos), individually subscribed or included in full-text databases, which can be assessed through the platform’s search engine, also known as Digital Library of CHUP.
